Worth It: Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow or Bliss What A Melon Sleeping/Overnight Mask?

Everybody loves the Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask. And why not? It’s Instagrammable and does what it claims to do..one of the many reasons this product consistently sells out. However, it might be a tad pricey for what it does? Enter the Bliss What A Melon Overnight Mask which I happened to walk by on one of my Target runs, and I’ve also come across a couple times on Instagram. On paper it definitely sounds like it could be a dupe of the Glow Recipe one. Here I will compare and contrast both and you can make your own decision about which one is “Worth It”.

Disclosure: I bought these products with my own money from Glow Recipe and Target respectively. I was not given anything in exchange for this review/comparison. I enjoy doing product reviews to share my own experiences with the product and hope someone finds it useful. I do not work for Glow Recipe, Bliss, or Target.

Why The Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask Has A Long Waitlist

About Glow Recipe:
As quoted from Sephora, "Glow Recipe was created by beauty industry veterans Sarah Lee and Christine Chang (owners of Korean beauty-curated GlowRecipe.com) to elevate K-beauty to an everyday luxury." Their skincare line focuses on texture, natural ingredients, and hydration as the foundation for better skin.

G.R. Product Description:
As quoted from Glow Recipe, "The Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask is a luxuriously bouncy, breathable sleeping mask that smoothes and perfects skin, overnight.”

G.R. Product Claims:
As quoted from Glow Recipe, "This pillow-proof formula acts as a radiance-boosting hybrid hydrator, formulated with soothing, amino-acid rich Watermelon Extract, hydrating Hyaluronic Acid, and pore refining AHAs that work while you sleep to gently exfoliate and clarify." Basically your skin should be hydrated, glowing, and ever so soft to the touch.

G.R. How To Use:
As quoted from Sephora, "To use as a sleeping mask: use two scoops or a generous layer on skin as the final step of the evening routine. For drier skin types, layer an additional dime-sized amount onto the skin. Be sure to gently pat, not rub, mask into skin until absorbed and wash thoroughly in the morning.

To use as a wash-off mask (ideal for sensitive or stressed skin): use the spatula to scoop the face mask and spread a thick layer gently across the face from forehead to chin. Rinse with lukewarm water after 10 minutes.

Due to the highly natural makeup of the Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask formula, some separation may occur. Mix the formula vigorously with the included spoon for a full minute to allow the formula time to fully re-incorporate. Afterwards, your mask should have a gelatinous, gel-like texture."

Bliss What A Melon: A Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask Dupe?

About Bliss:
As quoted from Bliss, "Founded in 1996, the original Bliss NYC ignited a modern spa and skin revolution with ingenious products, a super-positive, never-fussy vibe, and brownies...We want everyone to put their best face forward. So, we leverage the newest technologies (and crunch so many numbers) to bring you spa-powered products that work in every budget."

Bliss Product Description: As quoted from Bliss, "This potent overnight mask creates a nutrient-rich veil to bring tired, stressed-out skin back to life."

Bliss Product Claims: As quoted from Bliss, "Removes dead cells and toxins for a refreshed, dewy complexion; boosts skin’s defenses against stress and the environment...Balances to calm and de-stress; rehydrates as it tops off moisture levels and electrolytes to plump and soften Wake up to vibrant, supple skin."

Bliss How To Use:
As quoted from Bliss, "Massage a thick layer onto clean dry skin for 1 minute, avoiding the eye area. Let it dry [super quick!], then sleep on it. Wake up and rinse thoroughly. Use 2-3 times per week." Now, I'm not sure how "thick" of a layer they mean. I just used enough that it would cover my face, but since you have to rub it in quickly before it possibly pills (like the Glow Recipe one), I didn't want to put a thick layer either (it's not like it's a wash off mask). I still got pretty good results, so don't think you need to apply a lot.

Beautiful Packaging vs. Formula

GR Packaging:
Beautiful ice cube-like glass jar in millennial pink. Very feminine looking and very Instagrammable (especially if you love the color pink).

GR Scent & Texture:
It does smell like watermelon (at times a bit like watermelon Jolly Rancher too). For texture, it is very runny and (for lack of a better term) “mucus-like”. After it is stirred (for nearly a full minute!), it becomes more of a liquid jelly texture. The product itself looks like a glittery pink, but no actual glitter shows up on your face when you use it.

Bliss Packaging:
A more simple and sturdy plastic jar, yet it is still very aesthetically pleasing with the font and color choices.

Bliss Scent & Texture:
This smells very smiler to the GR, maybe even a tad bit more like watermelon Jolly Rancher than the GR. The texture is less runny than the GR, but still the same liquid jelly texture. The main difference is that the Bliss one is definitely easier to scoop up. You don’t have to constantly stir it for approximately 1 minute like the GR one (sometimes after stirring the GR one is still somewhat slippery to scoop up with the included spatula). I was able to scoop up the Bliss one using the GR spatula without any issues and without all that stirring.

The GR might have the prettier packaging but the texture of the Bliss is better.

Especially for those who complain about the runny texture and the constant stirring of the GR one, the Bliss in my opinion is more elegantly done. I don’t mind stirring/shaking a product prior to use, but when a product is constantly a runny “mucus-like” gel texture, it can be a bit off-putting to be honest.

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask Review

GR Performance:
I think where this product shines is during warmer weather like spring and summer. It adds just a bit of overnight hydration without overwhelming your skin (something similar to the lightness of the Laneige Water Bank Sleeping Mask). However for drier skin and especially during colder weather like fall and winter, I wouldn’t exactly call this product hydrating. If anything this product is more for light exfoliation while you sleep, for those nights when you just can’t be bothered to go through your complete skincare routine. I like to use my eye area to gauge how good a sleeping mask is. If it looks brighter or more hydrated, etc. then I would say it’s done its job. Unfortunately half the time my eye area looked the same, so if you normally look a bit haggard in the morning, don’t expect this to suddenly make you look like Cinderella.

GR Pros:
  • Smells good (if you’re not sensitive to scented products).
  • Feels somewhat relaxing especially if you use it during warmer weather (put it in the fridge for something really cooling & de-puffing).
  • A decent pick-me-up when you can’t be bothered with your entire skincare routine, or to properly fit in some exfoliation.
  • A good sleeping mask choice for oily/combo skin.
  • Lots of extracts/natural ingredients.
GR Cons:
  • Somewhat pricey at ~$45 USD (there are definitely other exfoliating sleeping masks not necessarily watermelon that pretty much do the same thing at a cheaper price).
  • Although at the bottom of the list, this product does contain alcohol for those that are sensitive to this ingredient or prefer to use products without it.
  • The slimy texture and constant stirring will be off-putting to some.
  • Won’t necessarily replace a real exfoliating product or actives even though this does contain some AHAs.
  • Not hydrating enough for drier skin/during colder weather.

Bliss What A Melon Reviving & De-Stressing Overnight Mask Review

Bliss Performance:
Similar to the GR one, this product probably would shine more during warmer weather like spring and summer. Though, with that said, I do think this product is slightly more hydrating than the GR. In fact, this actually leaves my face slightly dewy/glowy compared to the GR one. I suspect it’s the Timiron Halo for “radiant strobing.” My experience with this product is pretty much the same as the GR one but slightly better. My face definitely felt slightly hydrated when I woke up the next morning (more than the GR one) and my face felt soft while washing it off. I still wouldn’t say I look like I had 8 hours of sleep, but I felt like this product did a couple of things better than the GR (which I did previously use and like prior to the Bliss). Also I happened to concentrate the product around my eye area one night and the next morning my small millia already disappeared. It might have already be on its way out from my constant use of the product, but to suddenly realize it’s gone the next morning is quite a feat! I’ve used the GR for about the same amount of time and I didn’t really notice any improvement around my eye area though some days it looked slightly brighter and other days just the same.

Bliss Pros:
  • Very affordable at ~$12.99 USD
  • Easy to find – should be available at all if not most local Target stores.
  • Leaves you with a semi-dewy (healthy glow) kind of finish.
  • Lots of extracts/natural ingredients.
  • According to their website they are paraben-free, SLS-free, petroleum-free, mineral oil-free, and cruelty-free (to name a few).
  • Bonus: I personally noticed a difference in my millia when I concentrated the product around my eye area.

Bliss Cons:
  • Won’t necessarily replace a real exfoliating product or actives even though this does contain some exfoliating agents such as citric acid, etc.
  • Not hydrating enough for drier skin/during colder weather.

Is the Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask Worth The Hype?

GR Final Impressions:
This is perfect for light refreshing hydration (especially in warmer weather) and it has some decent results, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say it left my face “glowing” and “I look like I had 8 hours of sleep”. If you normally have dark circles, etc. from a lack of sleep, you will pretty much look the same except slightly more hydrated and softer skin. In fact, if you already regularly use actives like retinol/tretinoin, vitamin C, stronger AHAs, or even already practice gentle daily exfoliation with a cleanser/toner, you most likely won’t be impressed with this product. It’s still a decent product, just don’t expect it to do more than what your actives/exfoliators already do.

Final Rating = 2.5/5 (this would have been at least a 3 had I not tried the Bliss one).

The Exfoliating Sleeping/Overnight Mask Worth It Winner

Bliss Final Impressions:
Just like the GR, this is perfect for light refreshing hydration (especially in warmer weather and if you keep it in the refrigerator). Unlike the GR, I can honestly say I had a bit of a glow right after application and even until the next morning, I can feel my face being a bit more hydrated and softer than usual. Again if you already regularly use actives like retinol/tretinoin, vitamin C, stronger AHAs, or even already practice gentle daily exfoliation with a cleanser/toner, you might not be super impressed with this product, however I really like this as a pick-me-up (also because I hardly sheet mask these days). It also mysteriously made my millia disappear (literally the only thing I did that night was wash my face and applied this). With that said, I am still very much interested in the Glow Recipe Watermelon Moisturizer as I would like to see how that one functions as a lightweight moisturizer/hydrating serum for warmer weather.

Final Rating = 3.5/5 (mainly for the millia removal, plus glowy hydration at an affordable price point).

The Bliss one is my "Worth It" winner

This is because for the ingredients and texture, why would you pay more for essentially the same product?
